Rogers Media Fined $200,000 for Violating Canadian Anti-Spam Law

The Toronto Star is reporting today that Rogers Media was fined $200,000 by CRTC for violating Canadian Anti-Spam legislation.

Rogers Media has agreed to pay a $200,000-fine to the CRTC for allegedly sending unsolicited email advertisements.

The fine was levied under anti-spam legislation which took effect last year.

The CRTC says the apparent violations stretched from July 2014 to July 2015 when consumers found emails came with an “unsubscribe” option that wouldn’t function properly.

It is yet another reminder for business owners to be aware of the local laws and regulations that govern their online presence. We’ve posted previously about our experience in bringing organizations in compliance with CASL. While it is something that requires time, resources and training, it is both a customer friendly move and a way to avoid costly government fines in the future.
